Shaping the Future and Celebrating the Past - A Brief History of Sick Children in Greater Manchester 1829-2009

Pamela Barnes
2010

"History reminds us just how far we have come. Fortunately gone are the days when parents in the UK were not allowed to visit their child in hospital or could only see their child through a glass partition. Pamela Barnes' comprehensive review of the children's hospitals in Greater Manchester over the last 180 years shows us the transformation brought about throughout the industrial revolution, by charities, by the development of paediatrics as a specialty in its own right and finally with the creation of the NHS 60 years ago."

Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital "Pendlebury” 1829-1999.

Pamela Barnes
Churnet Valley Books, 43 Bath Street, Leek, Staffs. ST13 6JQ
Foreword By Sir Harry Secombe C.B.E.

"There can be few more emotive subjects than that of sick children. With the advent of the 21st century, the Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital will move into a new purpose built building and surroundings.

As a tribute to all who have contributed to the well being and care of the thousands of children who have passed through this revered institution since 1829, it is fitting that the history is written.

The true spirit of a hospital is to restore health and make advances in its methods and expertise. The writing of a history, not only honours the past, but highlights the purpose for the future; that children deserve the very best that can be offered to them, especially in time of sickness.

May the hospital continue to serve children in the future as it has in the past.”

Evaluating Children's Health Services The Adolescent User Perspective

Action for Sick Children

Adolescents are a resource group mostly underused when planning provision to cater for their needs within healthcare. Action for Sick Children has long held the view that children and young people should have a right of involvement in the planning and provision of their health treatment and be given the opportunity, where appropriate and possible, to made informed choices when they have to visit hospitals.

The report aims to demonstrate how action for Sick Children developed a unique survey tool to assess the views of adolescents undergoing treatment within the health service.

Meeting the Needs of Children and Young People Undergoing Surgery

Christine Hogg and Christine Cooper

Illness and hospitalisation constitutes a stressful experience for children and families. It is often the first crisis a child has to confront and they are particularly vulnerable, and a difficult experience can be emotionally and psychologically damaging. However, an admission to hospital, while a stressful event, also presents an opportunity for facilitating a positive experience by ensuring, where possible, the emotional needs of the child and family are met.

This report brings together the most relevant and up to date information to provide a guide to all who work with children in recognising and providing care that addresses the emotional needs of the child and family. In this way it is hoped that we can contribute to promoting best practice and ensuring we protect and meet the needs of our future generation.
